The Indian electric two-wheeler (E2W) market, once dominated by premium and performance-focused startups, is shifting towards more affordable options, catering to the mass market. Bengaluru-based Simple Energy has joined the likes of Ola Electric and Ather Energy, introducing the Wave range, a lineup of six models starting at ₹1.10 Lakh (ex-showroom).
From Performance to Family Scooters
Simple Energy, founded in 2019, initially focused on performance and long-range electric mobility with its first product, the Simple One. The Wave range, launched in September, marks a deliberate expansion into the family scooter segment, offering an affordable entry point into the brand’s portfolio. “We definitely want to scale up and become a part of the top five clubs. Hopefully, in the top three very soon, depending on how we scale from here,” said founder and CEO Suhas Rajkumar.
The broader E2W industry is also moving towards affordable options. Ola Electric’s S1Z and Ather Energy’s Konarc are priced competitively, targeting customers who would otherwise buy conventional petrol scooters. Ola’s S1Z variants are priced at ₹79,999 and ₹99,999, with IDC-certified ranges of 179 km and 301 km, respectively. Ather’s Konarc family scooter starts at ₹99,999, offering range options from 100 km to 200 km. Rajkumar acknowledges this competition: “ICE products are definitely a competition. Our objective is to change the way people move from petrol to EVs.”

The Wave models are intended to serve as an entry point for a larger mass audience. This shift comes at a time when the broader electric two-wheeler industry is also moving in the same direction, with manufacturers increasingly targeting customers who would otherwise buy conventional petrol scooters.
The Indian E2W market is growing rapidly, with electric two-wheeler registrations up 64% year-on-year in August. As competition intensifies, the next phase will focus on winning everyday commuters. With the Wave, Simple Energy aims to move closer to its goal of becoming a top-five player and eventually the top-three position in the market. The Wave is both a product launch and a scale test for Simple Energy, making it a key step in the company’s growth strategy.
